Hi Howard,
That sounds too much like hard work.
If you want the background to be dark, apply negative exposure
compensation. (e.g. -1.5EV)
With a flower close-up, you should be able to cover several
AF sensors with the subject, so "standard" E-TTL should work.
If you have a white flower, apply positive FEC. E.g. +1EV
FEL should not be necessary. You need FEL if
1) the subject is not over an AF point when you shoot flash
2) the subject included unusual reflectance (e.g. mirror, water)
3) you want to meter for flash range/aperture before shooting
