Hi Howard,

On the Elan 7E, unlike some older EOS bodies, ambient exposure
compensation does NOT affect the flash exposure.  To change the
flash exposure, you need to set FEC. You should search for the
threads in the List archives about this topic.

If you do use E-TTL, only the selected focus point matters:
the metering pattern does NOT affect the flash exposure.

FEL assumes that you are metering and shooting from the same
distance from the subject. If you change your working distance
between metering and shooting, you risk exposure errors.

You can always FEL and recompose from the same camera position.

Or you can use the built-in TTL flash and rely on the 50%
coverage 3-zone 4-segment TTL flast meter with appropriate FEC.

Or perhaps experiment with Michael Quack's D30 trick and switch
your lens into Manual focus?  Will this work for an ETTL film
camera like the Elan 7E?
