Sure, for sports the D30 would do OK especially for newspapers which do not
require a perfect image, just an image.
Not as fast as the D1 in terms of fps/burst mode, but still very good.
The D30 is designed for the non-professional market with Canon's pro entry
to arrive later this year. 
I hope the new digital camera is verything one would hope for. I really like
using my Canon gear and personally the investment in lenses would kill me if
I had to switch. :-(
