Hi George, You have the right idea using mode 2 for your panning shots. I
would leave it on regardless of how fast your subject is going. The blurry
shots are most likely a combination of slightly erratic pan movement and/or
shutter speed too slow. As helpful as mode 2 is with panning to get
background movement, it still requires a steady movement to keep the subject
sharp. Unless you have had a reasonable amount of practice with pans I would
recommend a shutter speed not slower than 1/125 to start with.Better still,
1/200 or 1/250 would ensure more consistently sharp subjects. The best bet
is to shoot some at each speed then check the results against your hastily
scribbled data later. Stick with mode 2 for panning though, it should work
well for the horse jumping.
