I think the tripod collar (albeit rather expensive) is definitely worth the
money. When using the lens on a monopod or tripod, the combination of body
(I have the EOS 5) and lens is much more stable. Especially for vertical
shots which I didn't dare to do on my Manfrotto 141RC head (and definitely
NOT on my flimpsy monopod). The collar makes it very easy to switch between
horizontal and vertical orientation.
