I'm not sure if it was intended by Canon, but one effect of making their big glass 
white is that, when you see a bunch of photographers with black lenses, you can be 
pretty sure that they are shooting Nikon (there may be a chance they are shooting 
Minolta, Pentax, or Canon FD, but most likely they are shooting Nikon.  Therefore if 
people see a bunch of white lenses, (there is a great picture I saw of a tennis 
tournament where you can see dozens of photographers in the pit, all with white 
lenses) they'll think Canon is the most popular, but if they see a bunch of black 
lenses, they'll think Nikon is more popular.  

A couple of months ago, I went to an event in downtown Phoenix, with concerts and 
parades, etc.  Every photographer with big glass had black lenses.
