Hi Norman,
I have similar problems occasionally when bouncing flash off nearby
surfaces. The only way to really know what light is being put out is to set
the flash to manual, use a hand-held lightmeter in front of the subject and
take a reading, then set your cameras' exposure accordingly.
Certain meters have an off-cord setting which means you can take a flash
reading without connecting a PC cord. Just set the meter, place in front of
your subject, then go back to your camera and fire the flash manually.
