I have looked at many sites including the Chuck Westfall site for a specific
answer to this question. When using the EOS-3 and 550EX in AV mode, using
the flash for fill from what I have read the camera meters and selects a
shutter speed based on ambient light. So, the camera does not adjust the
flash output based on aperture selected? Instead it could select too slow a
shutter speed to handhold requiring you to use a tripod or manual settings,
more often while shooting flash, Instead of underexposing the ambient light
thus using the flash as the main light. Is this correct?

Thanks
Lee
