Hi list,
My EOS50e ain't a 3 or 1V, but it turns out it still is a stone floor-proof
piece of gear. Or so my Firday experience shows.
I was on my way to a concert I was shooting on Friday when I popped into my
bank. I sat in an armchair to prepare my money, put my Lowepro MiniTrekker
on my lap, and -- can't remember why -- unzipped the front cover. As it
terrifyingly turned out later, I forgot to zip it back up.
I stood up and the next thing I remember is the sound of my EOS50e body, my
crappy 28-80 zoom and my 550EX flash crashing against the imitation marble
floor of the bank (they all slipped out separately). I almost wet my pants
in terror (please excuse the description, but that is how I felt).
The body fell from ca. 80cm, and the flash from about 60cm. My hands
shaking, I turned the camera on and the LCD screen went on. 'It ain't dead
yet,' I thought, reasurred. In the car that drove me to the concert I was
shooting, I checked everything carefully, and it seemed to work fine. Even
the 28-80 worked all right, showing absolutely no signs of damage.
Those initial impression were confirmed today when I got my films and slides
from the concert back. The camera continues to expose correctly, and the
flash -- which I was worried suffered even though there was no direct
mechanical evidence -- seems to work perfectly, too. Slide film confirms
that especially.
I am still amazed at how the camera body survived the fall. Apart from
thinking it was an act of God, I believe it didn't go to the floor
directly -- it bounced off the opening front cover of the MiniTrekker on its
way down. Plus, it seems that what actually hit the floor was the Battery
Pack, which absorbed most of the shock.
Which brings me to my BP REPAIR QUESTION. There is a really tiny protruding
element on top of the BP that goes into a screw hole and helps keep the BP
in place. That element came off when my BP crashed against the floor. With a
heavy lens on (like my Sigma 70-200/2.8, which luckily didn't slip out of my
bag as it was well secured in there), the body and the BP no longer feel
like one thing in my hand the way they used to. I just feel the BP move a
little.
And the question is: what should I do now? I was considering using some
strong glue to put a tiny piece of plastic in the place where the tiny
element used to sit. Bur I think maybe no glue is strong enough to withstand
the strain... Another option that flashed through my mind was to stick some
high-friction tape (rubberized or sth) on top of the BP so that the friction
between the body and BP is high enough for them to feel like one again? Is
that clear to you? What would you advise?
Thanks in advance. And protect your EOS gear -- you know few things are more
precious in this world.
Maciek
