One of my friends overwintered in Antartika in 1984. All cameras were manual
and advancing a frame would require a couple of seconds of very careful
winding not to break the film or cause emulsion cracks. Lowest temperature
was in the order of -40 degree C but this procedure was also the norm at
higher temperatures.

Are the winding mechanism of modern day cameras, and specificially the EOS
3, designed to prevent film breakage or emulsion cracks? Are the films
designed to operate under these conditions with modern day advancing
mechanisms? At what temperatures would problems start to occur.

Thanks
