There ARE applications for FTM in AI Servo mode. You need to have configured
your EOS to start AF with the AE lock button (CF 4). This lets you start and
stop AF at any time - independent from the shutter release button - and you
can use FTM to focus in case the AF couldn't find focus or focused on the
wrong thing. You can also use FTM *before* starting AF to prefocus the lens,
which helps with focusing speed and sometimes lets the AF lock on a "difficult"
subject if the starting point is close enough.
You're right though to say it doesn't make much sense to use FTM while the
AF is still trying to find the focus. But it does make sense *before* and
*after* the AF does his thing.
