Yup. You did apparently miss something becuase this
has been one of the greater recent Canon technology
announcements - almost as much buzz as USM and IS.
But it's been talked about more than just in the
recent digest posts. Search the archives, or you can

Essentially, this technology reduces the size and
weight of super-teles to a more manageable size which
us mere humans can actually wield.
