There are a couple of ways to see the pre flash of an E-TTL set up. Just
set the flash (or camera as appropriate) to 2nd curtain sync and set the
shutter to 1 second or so. You will see the preflash just before the mirror
goes up, then the full flash just before the shutter closes 1 second later.

Alternatively if you have mirror lockup, set that. Again you will see the
pre flash just prior to the mirror going up (because E-TTL flash uses the
same exposure sensors in the prism that normal exposures use) and then the
full flash when the shutter opens.

Both the above MUST be done with the flash either camera mounted or on the
Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 as anything else will lose E-TTL. This is stated in
the user manuals of cameras with E-TTL and with the 550-EX it shows on the
display panel when using extension cords other than the OCSC2.
