The reason is actually quite simple. The connection cord-3, cables an all that
exists as a multiple flash solution for the EZ line of flashes. They were
available much before E-TTL came arround and yes, they *only* preserve TTL
metering besides of limiting other flash functions (like 2nd curtaint sync &
so). If you've been using them for your macro shots with the 420EX, you have had
worked only in TTL mode (Does the 420EX have a E-TTL-mode led like the
380ex?).... that could be an explanation of you not seeing the pre-flash. Plain
TTL doesn't use any.
Luckily for you, the OCSC2 is not very expensive. It's the only way for wired
off camera ETTL.
