When I first got my second hand EOS 10, I knew nothing of this 'Never
clean the mirror' stuff. So, I proceeded to get out the lens cleaning
tissues and lens cleaning solution. And I carefully and GENTLY cleaned my
mirror. (camera had been sitting for years)
The result was a nice clean mirror, and I had no apparent problems. So,
you can clean it, but I think only if it really needs it, and don't do it
very often.
