Technically, it's the JFIF file format that lets you save files with the .jpg 
extension without any compression.

JPEG is not a file format. It is a method of compression. JFIF is the format used for 
files such as myPicture.jpg. The JFIF file format lets you specify the data 
compression: 
    compressed with JPEG compression
    compressed with LZW compression
    no compression
