With a variable aperture lens, when you zoom to tele, you effectively lose
as much as a stop. If you're shooting someplace with an f/4-5.6 variable
aperture zoom and f/4 is the right shooting aperture for the situation
(film ISO, quantity of light, shutter speeds, etc), your exposure will be
fine, UNTIL you zoom in, whereupon it'll be one stop under.

With a fixed aperture lens, if you set it to f/4, it's f/4 no matter where
your zoom ring is.
