I think the 24 2.8 would be a better lens for a first wide-angle. Several
reasons: (1) 28 is duplicated by most decent short zooms these days(28-70L,
28-105, Etc... one of which is possibly already be in her bag... And YES, I
know that a prime will beat most of these, but why duplicate focal lengths
when you are just beginning to build a kit?) (2) The 24 2.8 has much better
contrast and flare control (3) 24 will give a more pronounced wide-angle
effect that will require some modification of her "vision" to utilize
effectively. (4) Having owned both, the images with the 24 just seem to
have something that the ones with the 28 just don't have. Call it
luminesence, call it clarity, call it any one of 100 different HIGHLY
SUBJECTIVE qualities, I just prefer images from the 24. Even when I
purchase the next-gen L series wide-zoom, the 24 will remain in my kit for a
LONG time.
