Hi Russell,
This is a increasingly common problem in older EOS
bodies. Instead of hardening with age, the bump stop
rubber gets softer and sticky eventually leaving a
sticky residue (often mistaken for oil or grease) on
the shutter blades.
Cleaning them without replacing the bump rubber
doesn't solve the problem for 2 reasons:
1. The bump rubber will just put more residue on the
shutter blades when the camera is used and
2. (the main reason) The part of the shutter you see
with the camera back open is only 1/4 of the problem.
There are 2 sets of shutter blades (front and rear
curtains) and each set of blades has an inside and an
outside. So cleaning the bit you can get access to
still leaves another 3 surfaces with the residue and
this is why the shutter still sticks sometimes even
after cleaning the shutter blades.
To repair, it requires complete removal of all outer
shell components and the removal of the shutter for
cleaning and replacement of the bump rubber. In other
words it's an expensive job. The repair cost is
probably worth what another EOS 650 body would cost to
replace it - perhaps even more.
Regards
Gary
