        You may be able to do a IR/RF->IR trick it looks like it goes
to about 150 feet or so which isn't too bad (i bet in the open air
it should get this range since it is really meant for in home use)..
the IR transmitter is $50 and the other bit is $6 .. i haven't tried
either of these but found the link off of photo.net where a few kids were
trying to convert their HP48's and palm pilots into RC-1's :)

actually looking at this more closely i believe one of the units may need
to be plugged into the AC so perhaps if you are using your car as your
tripod.. :!.. there may be other battery powered versions of this in the
same price range though..
