I recently got a 300 f4 IS and tried it out a week ago at the zoo using a
monopod. The results came out OK, but not quite as razor sharp as I would
have liked (slide film). I was not sure if this was secondary to my
technique (very likely), the inherent optical quality of the lens vs my
expextations, or a problem with the lens. The IS seems to be working normally.
Well, I thought I would try some tests of hand held vs tripod mounted with IS
off just to see what the differences were. However, I discovered something
that led me to cut the test short until I find out if it is a problem or not.
I set up, outdoors a book cover that was bright white with different sized
black lettering and was trying to focus using manual and auto-focus with the
center focusing point on my Elan 7.
If I auto-focused from way out of focus (tripod mounted) it seemed to focus
on the letters well. But if I threw it slightly out of focus it seemed to
have a problem with hunting to find focus and sometimes settled on a focus
that was not perfect. Sometimes it seemed to make a vibrating or stalling
type of sound when trying to get the focus (IS off). Again, when focusing
from way out of focus it seemed to do a good job.
Am I getting to nit-picky here? Would one expect this type of performance in
this situation or is it possible there is a problem with the auto focus
mechanism of the lens? If there is a problem, does this stem from the
mechanism in the lens or in the camera? How does one get this checked out?
Of course I didn't notice this until it is beyond the 14 day return at B & H,
and of course this is the first lens that I bought deciding to go grey market.
Hoping everyone says this is normal performance in this type of test.
Thanks.
Howard
