Bob,
It has been discussed and verified by the Canon guy on the Compuserve
forum that you can leave the switch on mode 2 100% of the time. When in
mode 2, unless the camera senses a panning motion, it will default to
mode 1. Also, when panning, the camera senses movement whether
vertical, horizontal or diagonal and activates IS on the perpendicular
axis. I tried to find this discussion in my archived e-mails but
cannot.
