Ok, here's something to keep your minds off the current problems.
I did it, I finally got a new scanner. What's this, a flatbed scanner
you say? Right you are there. It's a hell of a scanner though, and can do
film, up to 4 by 5 at 2400 DPI.
The reasons I got this one instead of the new 4000 DPI film scanner, is
that my old flatbed died, and I can't live without a flatbed. So since this
one is hardly any more cash than a regular flatbed, I decided to check it
out.
First of all, it's the best flatbed I've ever seen. Very very crisp
text, and scanning photos is very fast and sharp.
Now for the 35mm film scan part of it. I was shocked at the quality of
the scans I'm getting from it. They are that good! It comes with a great
35mm film holder that also does 120 film. And a 4 by 5 holder is included.
Very easy to use.
The drawbacks I can see now are: slow scanning at high resolution.
Twain interface is clunky, and awkward at least for me, but everything
is there if you get to know it.
Previewing and calibration take about 40 seconds, a bit longish.
The good things about this scanner are too many to list here. I'll be
putting up a full review on my webpage soon.
I will mention some here now though.
Webscans at 600 DPI are simply fantastic. I've never seen such clarity
and sharpness on ANY 800 by 580 image. I will never again have to scan and
downsize, scanning at final size is the order of the day.
A webscan is pretty fast at about 40 seconds.
FARE works, and works fantastic! It takes a little longer, but this is a
time saver. No visible softening was noticed on a 2400 dpi scan that had
plenty of white marks on the neg.
You can easily flip, rotate, and zoom in on your preview, crop it, etc.
This scanner is USB and works with NO noticeable slowdown of your
computer, you can do anything else at the same time. Just plug it in when
you need it.
48 bit colour depth can be exported to Photoshop. Course I couldn't do
much with it, PS4 wouldn't allow me to crop it even, had to convert it.
Dunno what's up with that...
Overall, I have to say that amateur photographers, people who need a
good flatbed, people who want to make nice inkjet prints, and people that
need excellent web scans, can look no further. This one has it all.

shortly. I did some direct comparisons with my old scans from prints, and
was amazed. Even scanning a 4 by 6 print, this scanner blows away my old
Microtek E6. Remember folks, this thing has a Canon lens inside it...
