Red-eye reduction is a separate lamp to the side of the hot shoe (where the AF assist was on some other Canon bodies). In case you want to reconsider your decision re IIe vs 7e: the AF assist will flicker ONLY if the flash is engaged. In the Basic Zone, the flash will pop up automatically and AF assist will fire in low-light conditions (even those greater than EV 1). In the Creative Zone (P, Av, Tv, M, and DEP), the AF assist will flicker ONLY if you manually pop the flash up.
