Canon have stated that both will continue to be sold.
A quote from the Canon USA press release at
http://www.usa.canon.com/press/080101.html "..... and
several other significant improvements compared to the
original EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM, which will remain in
Canon's EF lens line-up."
This is good news from the point of view of choice,
but perhaps not so good from the cost viewpoint. IMO
if Canon had replaced the original with the IS model,
the IS model would have been introduced at a price
point closer to the original.
But at least there is still a choice and the IS model
will probably drop in price over time anyway.
