Well it depends from what kind of photography you're involved in.

When I take landscapes I use no automatic at all. This is because I'd like
to have full control over creating photos. And when taking landscapes I
usually have lots of time to do that manually. I really don't like the
camera makes photos instead of me.

But of course there are times when you don't have time to do everything
manually. This happens when you take photos on sports events, parties,... At
such moments I switch to AF and use some more automatic too. I found Eye
Control (elan7e) is really nice for taking fast shots. I really like it and
I usually have no problem with it, but of course there are times when it
makes a failure of course.

I usually use One Shot when using AF. In some cases I used AI Servo too.
It's really nice when the subject is moving. I personally had no problems
with AI Servo when using my Canon 28-135 IS lense, but on Sigma lense that
wasn't true exactly, because they were to slow in AF.

And finally I really don't support the idea that it is better to have a
slightly blurred picture than no picture at all. Well of course you need
photos for documentary purposes sometimes, but if you take to much
documentary photos you never improve your skills and it looks like you don't
take care of the quality of your photography.
