The reason is not difficult to fathom. Earlier IS lenses, like the 28-135 are indeed 
not to be used on a 'pod unless IS is
turned off.
The super teles are a different story. It didn't help when Canon printed the manuals 
incorrectly, stating IS was to be turned off for
them too.
