Hi,

I've used both and bought the EF 50 1.4USM. The EF 50 1.8 is a very good to
excellent lens in terms of contrast and sharpness if stopped down 1-2
f/stops but the EF 50 1.4USM is slightly better and for a given f/stop,
slightly crisper and sharper. The EF 50 1.4USM is also slightly faster
focusing and better made. If you use a 50mm lens a lot get the f/1.4, if
this is just another lens in your bag and the 50mm focal length is covered
by another excellent lens (like an EF 28-70 2.8L or maybe even EF 28-105
3.5-4.5USM), get the f/1.8. There is as you mention a BIG difference in
price and IMO it is hard to justify unless you will use the EF 50 1.4USM a
lot! That said, the EF 50 1.4USM is one of my favorite lenses along with my
EF 85 1.8USM, my EF 300 2.8L, my EF 28-70 2.8L, my EF 70-200 2.8L and my ...
well you get the picture. :)

Chip Louie
