The 2.5/50 mm compact macro for its unparred sharpness
and versatility at acceptable speed.

In making, handling, mechanical workmanship - yes, the 
difference to the current 1.8 is drastic. If you can get
hold of a 1.8 mark I (metal mount) it will not be that bad.

The difference in speed is a mere half f-stop.
Not much if you rarely use it at low light, but maybe
decisive if you do so often. However, in this case I'd 
rather go for the 1.2/85 mm L USM.

So, if speed is a concern, the 1.4 is okay.
If mechanic quality is a concern, as well.
If price is your point, the 1.8 is still an 
excellent lens. 
If you are after max optical quality, then 
go for the macro.
