Salutations Hugo!
Thanks for writing directly to me. Tonight I tried both the 70-200mm f/2.8L
and the 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM and both lenses seemed to work properly with
the centre AF sensor (I turned ECF off and manually specified the centre
sensor).
Yesterday it wasn't behaving itself but today, no probs. I was using AF on
the exact same things under the same lighting conditions from the same
distances as yesterday.
I'm glad the problem has gone away, but I hope it doesn't come back. Sounds
like a bit of a nightmare to get it fixed if it is intermittent. Fingers
crossed!!!!
Thanks again for taking the trouble to get in touch with me directly.
I really do appreciate your help, especially from the other side of the
globe!
Yours truly,
Lawrance Lee

Hello!
I'm sending this to you directly as it seems that for some reason it did
not come through the EOS-list. Please see the email below. I know that the
email will probably not help you, but hopefully you can get it fixed.
Best regards,
Hugo.

Hi!
This sounds exactly like what I had with my Eos 50e years ago.
Although, it was never verified by Canon. What resulted from my problem was
a long and agonizing battle with Canon to get them to fix the camera even
though it was still under warranty. See, sometimes it
did focus, and therefore Canon didn't think there was no problem. In the
end I took series of photos with using different focusing points - the
ones with the middle focusing point were obviously out of focus (after the
camera gave up, I switched the lens into manual and too the blurry photo).
The ones taken with outer AF points (focus and recompose, so that the
image is the same) were always very sharp. Finally, I took these photos to
Canon and talked straight to the manager of the service department (wasn't
the first time though) and took my camera and lenses with me (they even
suggested that the problem is in the lens, while it clearly wasn't as I too
had tried it with numerous lenses. BTW, seemed that it worked better with
wide angle lenses.) and whowed the problem to the manager. Only then did he
admit that there was something wrong, and after that the camera was
repaired. Took, if I recall correctly, over 2 months to get it fixed
8closer to 3... it's in the EOS-archives...) But after I got the camera
back, I didn't get any info about what was fixed. Clearly something was
fixed (unlike on those many times when the camera was "checked and
cleaned") but I don't know what they did.
Sorry, I'm writing in a hurry and probably don't make much sense... but
anyways: I did have the same problem with different camera, it was hard to
get Canon to fix it, but finally they did.
Best regards,
Hugo.
