In the barrel you"ll find probably wrote "EF 400mm f/2,8 L USM II"
The main difference, I don't know about the focusing speed, is the optical
performances.
The II is really better, due the use of fluorite and UD glass.
If your friend buy the USM (non II) he will be surely disappointed with the
poor optical quality of the pictures ! The I is very cheaper than the II.
I have never used one or other, but I have read that ! :)
