No. Canon USA will repair any item under warranty with proof of purchase, but
gray items must be taken or sent to one of the Canon USA factory centers,
whereas items with a USA warranty can be repaired under warranty by any
independent Authorized Service Center provided they've been trained for that
particular item. In my limited experience it can take a year or longer after
initial release of a new product before ASC techs are certified to work on
it--this was the case with the EOS 3 (the metro Boston ASC wasn't yet trained in
September 1999).
