EOS Re: 1D? Who Cares? What About a Digi-SLR for Us Mere Mortals?

The 1D may be great for pros and those flush with cash, but will Canon ever 
offer a
consumer/prosumer digital SLR (say in the 3-4 mp range) for the masses? I 
seem to recall rumors about one but anyone know anything concrete?
