Thing is, excessive flash coverage will waste battery
power, and also might have other side effects, like
e.g. bounce light.

I have been wondering about this myself.

If I use a 50mm lens on the D30 with the 550 flash, will
the D30 send "fake" information to the flash telling it to
zoom to 80mm?

Or will it just zoom to 50mm and waste approx. 40% of it's
energy?

I haven't figured out this one.

But then again, flash TTL is so inconsistent with the D30,
why bother (almost).
