I too (and I believe many others) have used NiMH batteries in the 540EZ and
550EX flash for the past 5 years, no problems what so ever, I was using
1,100 mA initially, then changed them to the 1,350 mA, then more recently (3
years ago now) changed to the 1,600 mA.

You would need to "load" test them, it's usually just a smll resistor
(suitable resistand AND wattage) put across the battery and measured with
the multimeter, if the voltage drops quickly under load, the battery is
spent and needs recharging.
