I find the EF300/2.8L IS, with EF2X II TC, very useful for birds flitting about in 
bushes. I also use it with the 1.4X for in flight photos although, yes, it is 
certainly a handful! Still, this is
its great advantage over lesser lenses of the same FL . . . it is fast enough you can 
put a converter on it and still have enough speed to hand hold.
