the tamron does have higher MTF score, but first thing is its color
rendition,
it's cooler than the canon lenses, then its flare control is horrible...
i'd
stick with canon if all your other lenses are canon made... 20-35/2.8 or
20-35/3.5-4.5 are all good choices.

That's a lot of baloney! First the great the range in a wide angle zoom,
plus having a fixed aperture reduces the resolution.
Case in point, the 20-35mm F2.8L is sharper than the 17-35mm F2.8L. Now
varying the aperture you can reduce that loss to a degree. As you go wider
you get more aberrations.
Obviously you have not used the Tamron or you would not have said what you
did. I would bet you own the Canon lenses and are speculating from what you
heard third hand.
Speaking as a person who has ACTUALLY used them the flare is not bad on the
Tamron, the colors are NOT cooler, but the various distortions inherent with
wide angles are 1% or so greater. You do get a near normal focal length at
40mm which you don't get with the others, and the lens is tack sharp (yes,
it is sharper than the Canon lenses).
If I were to buy one today and money were a consideration, I would be
looking at the Sigma 17-35 F2.8-4L or again the Tamron.
The Canon 20-35 F3.5-4.5 is good but not great. You can get the same optical
quality in a Tokina 20-35mm 3.5-4.5 or others.
If you have to have a Canon lens (as some on this list do) then the best is
the Canon 20-35mm F2.8. Tack sharp but you lose the wider end compared to
the newer 17-35 or now 16-35mm.
Let me state it here first, I would bet a week's salary that the 16-35mm
F2.8L will not be sharper than the older 20-35mm F2.8L at comparable focal
lengths. And without a doubt will cost at least $US1100. You heard it hear
first.
