Tom, I think that increasing the number of segments is:
a) a commercial reason, makes a lot of rumour to speak about 35 segments, 45
AF points and so on.
b) brands are trying to make cameras more and more fail proof for consumer
use and fast shooting. If people can manage to have the 90% of their shots
acceptables Canon (and the others) have reached their goals.

Standard snapshots, touristic reportages are always made in the same way: a
figure against a monument or a wide shot panorama. ans so on. Using 35
points makes easier to read the light and find a typical scene.
Put advanced photographers who like to keep light in a certain way coming
from left, right, behind... need to handle completely this readings and I
think that having too much points makes difficult to predicte the results.

I got 5 month ago an Eos3 (coming from a Eos50E) but this now after several
rolls of slides (15-20) I can't predicte exactly what the camera is doing: I
often switch to spot, or keep the center AF selection and read a certain
area of the frame. I really preferred the esposition scheme of the former
body which I kept for 6 years and from which I could get 99.9% of good and
how supposed to be during shooting, exposures.
I'll continue studying this body though......

If you think Contax, Leica, and all MF bodies have a reduced number of
segments.......
