............... I still think the question raised earlier needs to be answered. Why have a > switch at all if the lens operates as suggested? Still makes no sense. I was at Canon Australia this morning to pick up the new 70-200IS for a two day trial - what a great service. While I was there I asked the technical manager about "IS mode 2 only" as I have been following this thread also. He was adamant that mode 2 is not suitable for static subjects/tripod use and that I should use mode 1 for this. He was aware of the alternate theory. We were both pushed for time so I did not pursue a detailed reason for his comments but I will be using the two modes as suggested by Canon. As you say Terry, if mode 2 was totally suited for both uses they would obviously not bother to provide two options. ............ I don't see how IS can be of help here. And my personal experience has borne > this out. Perhaps a simple panning operation, with a well behaved object, like a > sports car, mode 2 might be effective. I have not had such cooperative subjects I use mode 2 successfully for cars and bikes with good results. Most pans are fairly predicable and "well behaved" as you suggest above. I'll have a go at some more erratic subjects when I have a chance. I'm working at the coast tomorrow so will look out for any wayward seabirds to pan.
