Hello all,

I recently purchased a used lens (mail-order, hence blindly) and I must
admit that it has some odd marks, the likes of which I've never seen.
Perhaps one or more of you knows what the purpose is....

It's an older 28-70 3.5/4.5 zoom, and it has 2 holes drilled through the
outer shell of the lens barrel. The holes just penetrate the shell, but
don't go further. As the lens zooms, screws become visible through the
holes, but I don't know what the screws are holding and I'm sure as hell
not going to poke around and loosen things up. One hole is at about 1 o'
clock, and the other at 7 o' clock, when looking through the lens from the
camera-side. In other words, the axis of the drillings is perpendicular to
the direction of light travel through the lens, and the drill holes are at
the 1/7 positions.

I haven't gotten back my test roll of slides yet, so I can't comment as to
possible effect on the final product. But under what circumstances is such
an invasive procedure usually followed? Also, I know that resale value
isn't everything but it is a consideration for me and I have the impression
that such lens surgery would greatly affect its later sale price --
thoughts?

Thanks much as always,

Casper
