Yep, you are correct, it is only the serial number on the non-L lenses. I have just checked the equipment I have to hand and my 75-300 & 20-35 Canon's have only the serials, the 70-200 f/2.8 has a serial number and a factory code. I also noticed that the 1.4 and 2x converters have factory codes too. Another weird one is that the factory code on the EOS 30 (Elan 7e) is behind the camera door and not in the film chamber as previously suggested for other models.
