<But Canon's consumer lenses are well <designed optically and while optically may not be as good as the current pro <AF lenses are often better performers than the pro lenses of the last <generation of manual focus cameras.
Chip, yours was a really long mail! If you mean that current consumer lenses are better then former pro manual focus I can say clearly the're not. And I am not speakink in theory. I use manual focus 15,20,24,28,35,50,85,105,135,200,400 mm and, definitely they beat all the consumer AF lenses made today in sharpness, vignetting, distortion and even bokeh. If you are referring to today pro zooms, I have some too, they are on pair in sharpness but not so much in distortion, flare or vignetting. Leica and Carl Zeiss are in other world, much more expensive, better built and not so modern, but optically better in every field (I have some too) Kind regards.
