Perhaps Robert, Bob Atkins (of Photo.net) was close to accurate when he
commented a while back that Canon hadn't gotten it "quite right" yet with
diffractive optics technology, both in terms of application in a lens, and
what real production costs were going to be.  But after the hype, backing
out of actual production would have been a PR debacle.
