Hi Cian,

Yes, you need a hood.
No, you don't have to buy the accessory hood if you take care of your
camera.

I have the 50mm f1.4. I didn't buy it with the Canon hood.
I just found a screw on hood (the collapsible rubber kind) in a camera shop.
Was used but good quality, cost me $1.

You need the hood to protect against flare.
Some people also use the hood to protect against knocks.
If you can take reasonable care of your lens while using it, you don't need
the hard accessory hood, go with a generic rubber hood for your lens.

With 50mm and the average hood, you don't have to worry about vigenetting.
(I sprung money for a Canon hood for my EF 20-35mm wide angle lens).

~Hey Gang,
~
~For those of you who own the 50/1.4, have you found
~the NEED to use/purchase the accessory hood?
~
~The front element does seem nicely depressed within
~the lens housing to prevent any flare, but filter use,
~of course, places the filter element/glass flush with
~the front of the lens body.
~
~Kind regards,
~Cian
