The 50/1.4 has very solid construction, and offers full-time manual focus.
It also costs 4 times more than the 50/1.8 II.

The original 50/1.8 has a distance scale, a groove for a clip-on hood, and a
metal mount. The 50/1.8 II lacks a distance scale and has a plastic mount. A
separate attachment is required to use a hood with the 50/1.8 II.

If you plan to use manual focus, then skip the 50/1.8 II.
