Well, I guess this shows how smart your shooting buddies are.  The one
simplest thing you can do to improve the performance of any lens is to
add a good hood.  Keeping stray light from striking the lens at oblique
angles will improve contrast and reduce flare of your images.

The worst thing you can do is to stick a flat piece of window glass on
the front of your lens and then use no hood...this is just asking for
image degrading flare.

In short you are the smart one, IMHO, not your buddies who are making fun
of you.
