The various letters, numbers, and icons are all screwed up (for example, the
zoom settings read numbers like "188" and "C8" and stuff like that, and it's
impossible to tell what mode the flash is in).  Also, when you first put
batteries into the flash, the back panel lights up and the capacitors charge
up, even if it's off, but then it refuses to operate.  Once you take the
batteries out and put them back in, the flash discharges at full power as
soon as you close the battery cover (I learned that the hard way...ouch),
even if the power is off.

Yeah, it looks like the AF assist is there for green box mode.
