Back on the list again after a four-five year hiatus.

I'm wondering about flash compatibility between older EZ models and the new
line, specifically the D30 and the Powershot G2. Do the old EZ flashes just
do not work at all with the new digital cameras? Do they work, but with
limited functionality? If I buy a D30 or G2 or whatever digital gear Canon
comes out with in the future (they say a "digital Rebel" will be out in
12-18 months) will I be forced to buy a new flash?

I'm trying to figure out what gear I already own (A2E, 430EZ flash, compact
battery back, some EOS lenses) will be compatible with what, keeping in mind
my deep desire for lots of light when I shoot (I use the flash 90% of the
time, and the battery pack was the best $100 I spent) versus my desire to
not have to sell a child when the time comes to get some kind of digital
gear. I like the G2 for it's small size and hotshoe, but I suspect I'll need
to put an EX flash on it, and the only EX flash in the current line that
takes the battery pack is the 550, which is probably too big for that
camera, but the smaller flash (420) doesn't take the battery pack. Oh the
choices we must make....

This all comes down to trying to think through applications vs. cost vs.
what's coming down the pike in the future vs. lots of money sunk in
perfectly useful gear vs. wanting to go digital sometime in this lifetime.

Any thoughts, opinions, real-world experiences would be appreciated. Some
kind of flash compatibility chart would be much appreciated.

And after all these years I still have --- in my signature, because
Willem-Jan once said that some mailers use that to automatically strip the
signature.
