I like the way the Kenko 12mm with the 28-135IS its just enough to
get as close as you need with that lens. It still can auto focus
most of the time in good light, although it can take a good second or two.
For these butterflies I used manual focus and hand held with IS on 
and a ex380 flash with soft box.
