Hey Keith, It's not just power, increased light output gives you the ability to evenly cover a wider area when you want to illuminate everything in the finder with a wide-angle lens. It gives you options that you simply don't have with a lower output flash. Additionally the bigger flash give you the ability to cycle faster when shooting in E-TTL mode to capture action or quickly changing situations. This is due to having more power in reserve (stored in the flash's capacitors), and not using as much of the total capacity hence faster cycle times. There is more but this is off the top of my head.
